1. You may be given a topical anesthetic.

A topical anesthetic can numb the surface of your skin, so the actual Botox injections are less noticeable.

2. You will be given an appropriate amount of Botox in the indicated areas.

Not every patient receives the same amount of Botox. The number of units of Botox you will receive will depend on your practitioner's judgment. In general, doctors use the smallest effective amount of Botox when treating patients. Erring on the conservative side means that your results will look natural. You'll still be able to make all the facial expressions you need to express yourself; your expressions will simply be softened, especially around your eyebrows.

3. You will be given a list of instructions.

Once your Botox injections have been administered, your doctor will give you a list of aftercare instructions. In general, these instructions follow simple common sense. You'll need to keep your injection sites clean as they heal, and you may want to avoid applying heavy makeup for the rest of the day. You will also be advised to avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours. This precaution will ensure that the Botox in your face doesn't migrate to unwanted locations. Your doctor will advise you to take over-the-counter pain medication if you experience any soreness after your injections.

4. You will be given a few minutes to rest after the procedure.

Botox injections are typically administered in under 30 minutes. You can go about your day as usual once you leave the dermatologist's office. However, you'll be encouraged to sit and relax for a few minutes after your treatment. This will allow your doctor to catch and treat rare allergic reactions. It will also give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may still have about what to expect over the next few days.
