What do you need to know before choosing a cosmetic surgeon? Take a look at the top questions to ask before selecting a surgeon for a breast augmentation procedure.

Do You Specialize In Breast Augmentation Surgery?

A plastic or cosmetic surgery practice may include more than one surgeon. If the practice has multiple doctors, the surgeons may provide patients with a variety of procedure options that each professional specializes in. But if you have your sights set on one doctor, you will need to make sure that they have extensive expertise in breast surgery.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), patients should choose a provider who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, has specific training in plastic surgery (especially breast augmentation), and has trained for several years in this specialty.

Are You A Candidate For the Procedure?

The surgeon you select should have the ability to truthfully explain the procedure and evaluate you as a potential candidate. If you have an unrealistic picture of the results or want implants that don't fit your body, the procedure might not help you in the way that you expect. Along with the match between your expectations and the reality of the results, a qualified surgeon should assess your overall health needs and weigh them against the risks/benefits of the surgery.

If you're not a candidate for the procedure right now, ask the surgeon if there are changes you can make that will affect this decision. Candidates for augmentation should have fully developed breasts, are physically healthy, and aren't pregnant or nursing.

Do You Have Photos of Your Work?

You've found a surgeon who is an expert in augmentation and you now know that you're a candidate for the surgery. Before you schedule a procedure, ask for examples.

While you might trust the doctor's description of their expertise and ability to help you achieve the cosmetic results you're looking for, photos of the surgeon's work are necessary. These pictures should include before and after images of the same procedure that you have chosen.

What Can the Surgeon Do For You?

The photos of past clients can help you to understand the surgeon's ability and work. But they aren't necessarily a menu of examples for you to choose from. Augmentation doesn't look the same for every woman. The size, shape, and placement of the implants depend on your personal preferences/cosmetic goals, body frame, body type, and physical health.

Talk openly with your would-be future surgeon and explain why you aren't happy with your breasts. This should go beyond thinking your breasts are too small. Discuss what you dislike/like about the shape of your breasts, whether you feel they are too long, if they are too narrow/wide, and how you feel about their placement.
